Update: 1 dead, 17, including a firefighter, injured after gas line explosion destroys a building

UPDATE:
Officials have increase the number of people injured from this morning’s explosion to 17, which includes a firefighter who is listed in serious condition.

According to WRAL, six of the injured are in critical condition.

Durham officials say a contractor was drilling a sidewalk and tapped a natural gas line which set off the explosion.

Between the explosion and flames, the building eventually caved in on itself.

A deadly mistake in downtown Durham as officials are reporting at least one person has been killed and 15 others injured after a building exploded.

That building is still on fire, so the numbers could rise after everything is said and done.

According to WTVD, people nearby say it was a normal day when they heard a giant boom and the smell of heavy gas.

The explosion happened around 10 a.m.

At least one firefighter has been hurt and has serious injuries.




Police have evacuated the surrounding area for safety reasons.
