La Crosse firefighters joined thousands at the state Capitol Wednesday to protest Gov. Scott Walker's plan to end collective bargaining rights for a majority of public employees. “They marched with teachers and public employees to let them know that collective bargaining is a right, not an option,” said fire Capt. Jeff Murphy, president of the IAFF Local 127.
Police, firefighters and state patrol employees are exempt from the measure under Walker's plan, but, Murphy said, “when you take away collective bargaining from one group, it's a slippery slope.”
