Jacksonville Beach city leaders have voted in favor of dissolving its fire department and want to merge it with Jacksonville Fire and Rescue.

According to Action News Jax, The City of Jacksonville still has to vote on the proposal.

The majority of people living in Jacksonville Beach are in favor of the move.

People supporting the change say it’ll cut back on firefighter fatigue.

People against it cite the fire marshal, who said response times would increase four to five minutes.

Current Jacksonville Beach firefighters would be able to join the Jacksonville Fire & Rescue department if they meet employment standards.

The city would save $1.5 million over a 10-year period.
