Firefighters take bull by horns in surprise call out

A bull with his head stuck in a tree has been rescued by fire crews – using a winch and riot shields. Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service said that a crew equipped with specialist large animal rescue equipment responded to the unusual emergency in a field off Barby Road in Rugby shortly before 11am on Monday of this week.

Another appliance based in nearby Southam also attended the incident and the hapless animal, named Billy by his rescuers, was freed at about 12.15pm.

In a post on its Facebook page after the incident, the fire service said: “The crew had to use a winch, strop and riot shields to remove the bull from the tree.

“The bull was released back in to the field and seems none the worse for wear for the ordeal.”
