Firefighters happy with situation

Wanganui Fire Chief Kevin Smith does not think local firefighters are reacting to medical calls too often. He was commenting after claims that the local fire service was having to respond to medical calls on a regular basis because of a shortage in ambulances.

Figures obtained by the Wanganui Chronicle reveal the Wanganui Fire Brigade has responded to dozens of rescue or medical calls because St John ambulances aren’t available or cannot respond.

But Mr Smith said yesterday that was nothing out of the ordinary.

“We don’t go ahead of them, but are the first ones there because of time factors and other commitments,” he said.
