Fishkill — Hikers are being asked to stay away from a downstate preserve after brush fires lit up the night sky and destroyed a number of parked cars.

Firefighters have been battling the brush fire at Hudson Highlands State Park Preserve since Monday. The Fishkill Police Department shared pictures of the fire which show blazes of orange flame on Mount Beacon.

The state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation says the hiking trails are closed until further notice.

Police in Fishkill say volunteer fire departments from Dutchess and Putnam counties have battled the brush fire.

No hikers were injured but a number of vehicles were destroyed by the flames, police said.
