Firefighter falls into hole at darkened scene

While advancing a 1.75″ hoseline to attack a vehicle/structure/brush fire, I fell into a hole in the ground. This caused me to lose grip on the hoseline and my helmet to fall off. It was dark outside at the time of the incident preventing me from seeing the hole.

Lessons Learned

I believe this could have possibly been prevented by improved scene lighting and the presence of a safety officer. It was a wake up call to slow down and be aware of hazards on the scene. Especially in reduced visibility situations.
