A California firefighter in Oceanside defended himself from a knife-wielding arsonist last Thursday, encountering the unexpected assailant during a suspected house fire call.
The firefighter was inspecting a bedroom during a sweep of the house when the man jumped out and attempted to slash him with a blade. The firefighter was uninjured.
Sending police into the home, the first responders soon found the man dismantling a dresser and hurling parts at them. Ultimately, a police K-9 was used to subdue the man after Taser deployment proved to be ineffective.
According to the LA Times, the smoke was coming from a burning laptop that was placed on a stove. One police officer was treated for smoke inhalation and the 47-year-old suspect was taken to the hospital for a dog bite.
The suspect faces charges of arson and assault.
