Rural fire departments many out of funds after fighting wildfires the past several months now have some money to repair equipment and pay bills. With dozens of rural firefighters and legislators standing behind him, Gov. Brad Henry signed into law Tuesday a bill that provides nearly $9 million for Oklahoma’s volunteer firefighters.
Since Nov. 27, wildfires have burned more than 550,000 acres and damaged or destroyed more than 1,000 homes and businesses. State officials say at least three people, including one firefighter, were killed as a result of the fires.
