Fire destroys cottage in Cocagne

A fire of unknown origin destroyed a summer cottage along Cocagne’s Florina Beach yesterday afternoon. No one was at home when the fire erupted at about 4 p.m., said Cocagne Fire Chief Danny Desroches. The cottage was owned by an RCMP member.

A babysitter and the member’s children had left the cottage a short time before flames were reported seen on the outside of the structure by a neighbour, he added.

Neighbours were able to rescue a cat and a dog belonging to the cottage owner.

The roof was collapsing already by the time firefighters arrived and the decision was made to protect the neighbouring cottage which was five feet away. One wall of the neighbour’s cottage was also destroyed before the fire was put out, he said.

Bouctouche firefighters were called in to assist Cocagne battle the blaze with each department sending a dozen firefighters.

The provincial fire marshall’s office is expected to investigate the fire to see what caused it, Desroches said.

The Cocagne firefighters were the last to leave the scene at about 8 p.m.
