Firefighters in Homerton East London averted a major evacuation when a small bonfire spread out of Control in a yard at the rear of a residential street. An elderly man was burning some rubbish when the fire spread from a brazier into bushes threatening to engulf a number of Liquid Petroleum Gas Cylinders. Quick action by Crews from Homerton, Bow and Leyton Fire Stations quickly stopped the fire before the cylinders became involved which would have meant a potential 200 metre exclusion zone being set up. This would have affected over 100 homes and businesses and the Busy Homerton Hospital and closed several key roads. The Fire, which occurred at lunchtime on Friday 13th of May, was brought under control within minutes with one of the Cylinders cooled for one hour to reduce the risk of explosion.
