A Senegalese-born bus driver in northern Italy kidnapped fifty-one children and threatened them for 40 minutes before setting his bus on fire.
Officers of the Carabinieri gendarmerie managed to save the children before they could be injured, though the bus driver, Ousseynou Sy, sustained burns.
Sy posted a video to friends in Italy and Senegal before carrying out his plans, teeling Africa to “rise up” in response to the many migrants that have died on their way to Europe.
During the kidnapping, Sy told the children that “no one would survive.”
According to NBC News, Chief prosecutor Francesco Greco praised the Carabinieri for their swift and well-timed response.
“They carried out an operation that we see in films with special agents,” Greco said.
“Thank goodness, because by then the intent to massacre had ignited, and the man was starting to set fire to the bus, as he did.”
Sy is in police custody.
