Police officers in Des Moines were first on the scene of an apartment fire on Tuesday, assisting with the rescue of three people.

Families residing at the Birchwood Apartments were so desperate to save their children during the ordeal that they reportedly threw them out of the windows to law enforcement officers down below.

“I was asleep,” said resident George Bassette. “About the time I woke up I saw the fire shooting from the windows, dropping from the windows. Police officers was banging on all the doors making sure everyone was out.”

According to ArkLaTexHomepage.com, the fire was contained to the third floor, and there is significant water damage.

No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
