A Butte County deputy captured a tense moment in the California Camp Fire on his body camera, showing the devastation that effectively wiped out Paradise, California.
Deputy Aaron Parmlet did not know if he would survive after he entered the blaze in his squad car, carrying out his mission to rescue four nurses at Feather River Hospital in Paradise.
According to ABC News, Parmlet’s car couldn’t handle the thick smoke and broke down, forcing him to search on foot. Turning on his body camera, he wanted to leave evidence behind if he didn’t make it out.
Eventually, Parmlet found the nurses and was rescued by a bulldozer, which lef them out of the hot zone.
Around 85 people are dead and 296 missing in the aftermath of the fire, which was contained five days ago.
