Airman injured while attempting to pull driver out of fiery overturned dump truck

A man is dead and an airman injured during a horrific traffic accident on Monday afternoon.

According to WKMG, a tire tread from a dump truck caused it to overturn and catch fire along the Pineda Causeway.

Sgt. Moon from the Patrick Air Force Base jumped out of his vehicle, which was trailing the dump truck, and attempted to put out the flames and pull the driver to safety. The heroic effort from the airman did not change the ultimate outcome as the driver died at the scene.

A witness at the scene said the airman, “Took the little fire extinguisher we had. He crawled up on top of the truck and tried to get up to the cab because the driver was pinned in. We couldn’t get him out.”

Video posted to social media shows heavy black smoke being lifted up into the air.

FHP officials say they believe the truck hit the guardrail during the tire malfunction.

The airman was taken to the hospital after suffering some injuries and will recover.
