When classes meet at Chippewa Falls High School Monday morning, the focus will be on helping students deal with a bus crash that killed five people. The crash happened Sunday morning on Interstate 94 west of Osseo. The school band was on its way home from a marching band competition at U.W.-Whitewater when their bus slammed into a semi-truck that had gone out of control and rolled over.
Federal transportation officials are investigating the crash.
The bus was the first in a caravan of four buses. The school’s band director, Douglas Greenhalgh, his wife Therese, and their eleven-year-old granddaughter were among the dead. The bus driver, 78-year-old Paul Rasmus from Chippewa Falls and student-teacher Brandon Atherton, a 24-year-old U.W.-Eau Claire student from Waukesha, also died.
Twenty-nine people are recovering from injuries.
