Maui firefighters are busy trying to control a 3,000+ acre wildfire burning on the “Big Island.”

Roughly a thousand people were evacuated from the Kahului and Kihei area of Maui, while a major highway was closed down after it was charred by the fast-moving wildfire.

Tourists were being told to stay indoors and planes were being diverted because of the heavy smoke.

According to Maui News, the wildfire was first reported Thursday afternoon and 15-20 MPH winds have only fanned the flames.

Since then, tankers and helicopters have been dousing water on the flames, hoping to get it under control.
