Delaware County Fire In Historic Hotel
March 26, 2014
New York - Authorities in this Delaware County village are trying to determine the cause of a fire that destroyed a historic former hotel that a New York City artist had planned to convert into a gallery. Fire officials in Stamford told The Daily Star of Oneonta that the fire was reported about 10:45 a.m. Tuesday in the 116-year-old Rexmere building. The officials said the flames spread quickly through the seven-story wooden structure.
More than 150 firefighters battled the blaze, but by 1 p.m., the building was destroyed.
No one was hurt. Officials said the building’s caretakers weren’t home at the time.
The Rexmere Hotel opened in 1898 and operated for more than 50 years. It was converted into an educational center in 1965.
Manhattan-based artist Hunt Slonem planned to buy the property and turn it into a gallery.
