Rochelle Park Sushi Business Gutted
February 4, 2013
New Jersey - Flames caused extensive damage to one store in a Rochelle Park strip mall, and left several others suffering smoke damage on February 3rd. After receiving notification from neighboring Paramus that they were receiving 911 calls for a fire at Rochelle and Passaic Aves, the RPFD was dispatched shortly after midnight. Luckily, a full crew was at the firehouse at the time and Engine 2 was able to respond immediately. Heavy fire was visible inside Maguro Sushi House, one of six businesses in the strip mall. Flames broke out of the front of the store and extended up to the decorative fascia above it as the first line went into operation. A second alarm was called for bringing units from Paramus, Saddle Brook, and Maywood to the scene.
The heavy fire was quickly knocked down, but smoke pushed from the entire roof area, Truck companies opened up and vented, and kept the flames from extending. Fire broke out for a short time from the Fascia area and one handline took care of that quickly. All fire and heavy smoke was suppressed within one hour, but due to multiple renovations and void spaces, it took about three hours to place under control. One firefighter was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center, treated and released. Preliminary investigation appears to be electrical as a cause.
