A first responder in Louisiana -who pulled double-duty as a firefighter and police officer- was killed Monday night during an undercover police operation in East Baton Rouge Parish.
The EBRP Sheriff Sid Gautreaux said that the officer, who was part of both the Zachary Fire and Police department, was killed in the town of Baker when a truck -occupied by the suspect- struck and killed him as they were attempting to flee the scene.
The firefighter-officer was pronounced dead on the scene. He has not been identified by name.
“It’s just tragic. A Tragic thing. Another tragic loss,” Gautreaux said. “It’s sad when you lose anyone like this, but he was true public servant. It’s tragic when you lose anybody, but certainly someone young like that it’s hard to deal with.”
According to The Advocate, one bystander used her shirt to try and save the man, later covering his body with it when it became apparent that nothing could be done.
“There [was] a lady who used her shirt to try to cover his body and stop the bleeding. She was crying, and I tried to comfort her when I came out here,” one witness said.
The Sheriff reports that no shots were fired at the scene.
