Description of Fire Department: Dumfries and Galloway Fire and Rescue Service provides a cost effective emergency service which utilises its emergency management infrastructure to maximise the safety of communities across Dumfries and Galloway on a wide spectrum of risks.

The principle aim of the service is to preserve life and property and through partnerships with other agencies and council departments deliver a service responsive to locally identified needs with community safety at its core.

The service is delivered through 17 Fire Stations with one crewed by Wholetime and part-time staff at Dumfries, 15 stations crewed by part-time staff in all the other major population centres throughout Dumfries and Galloway and one auxiliary unit at Drummore. The following vehicles and equipment are located within Fire Stations across the region:

2 Specialist rescue vehicles
1 Aerial Ladder Platform (ALP)
1 Incident Control Unit (ICU)
2 Decontamination units
1 Urban Search and Rescue Unit (USAR)
1 Auxilliary Firefighting Unit

The Brigade personnel establishment is 122 Wholetime uniformed staff including 76 Watch based firefighters at Dumfries, specialist Officers based at Dumfries Headquarters, Newton Stewart and Stranraer Fire Stations and Fire Control operators based at Dumfries Headquarters. There are also 220 part time uniformed staff based at the Retained Stations around the region. 19 non-uniformed staff are based at Dumfries Headquarters fulfilling specialist posts in Finance, Personnel, Health and Safety and Administration.

Specialist departments including Fire Safety, Personnel and Training, Support Services and Administration, work along side the Operational element of the Brigade to provide a seamless delivery of services.

The Fire and Rescue Service has a Fire Station in all the major population areas of Dumfries and Galloway. These range from a Wholetime/Part-time Station at Dumfries to Part-time Stations in smaller towns and an Auxilliary Unit at Drummore.

The Service provides cover for emergency response to all areas of Dumfries and Galloway whenever required, through its Fire Stations and Personnel.
