Three Children Injured In North St. Louis Blaze
United States (Missouri) - Three children were injured in a fire late Friday night including one critically in a north St. Louis apartment building. St. Louis Fire Department Capt. Dan Sutter said the fire broke out on the first floor of the two-story brick building on the 3400 block of Belt Ave. just before midnight. Two of the buildings four apartment units were occupied at the time.

By the time firefighters arrived, the fire had spread to the second floor. Adults on the first floor and the second floor escaped the fire without injury, Sutton said. Firefighters carried three children from the second floor to safety outside the building and quickly contained the fire.

All three children were taken to area hospitals by fire department medics. Sutton said a fire alarm alerted those on the first floor to the fire, but that no working smoke alarm was found in the second floor unit.

Sutton said the common factor in injuries that occurred during three fires in the last month was the absence of a smoke alarm.
