Fire At Morton Welding Company
On Thursday May 3rd just before 6:00pm the Morton Fire Department responded to fire at the Morton Welding Company, Morton, Illinois. Morton Fire Departments units arrived to find a large storage bin fire outside the East end of the building. This area is a storage area where around 160 plastic bins are stored to a height of around 15 feet high.
On arrival the entire storage area was on fire and the fire was above the roof of the building. Because of the plastics involved, thick black smoke could be seen for miles.
Also stored in the area were a number of industrial liquid propane tanks. Several of the tanks exploded at different times which sent debris in the air.
The department’s aerial platform and large hand lines both inside and outside, the firefighters were able to contain the fire to the East wall, which sustained extensive damage.
All employees were evacuated. The company’s third shift was able to return to work and resume normal production.
A MABAS box alarm was called and several area departments were on scene to assist.
No injuries were reported.
The cause is still under investigation.
