"Fire was showing through the roof," said Chief H. Wayne Riley of the Lecompton Fire/EMS District No. 1. Firefighters set up a protective spray of water on a church to the west and a post office to the east.
Seven fire departments provided mutual aid. Fire crews fought the blaze through the night.
At one point, part of the roof collapsed on top of the burning racks of wood, complicating efforts to extinguish the blaze, Riley said. The back part of the building also had flammable oil stains and turpentine that fueled the fire.
The business was closed when the fire was reported, and no reports of injuries have been reported.
Firefighters have been rotating in shifts to provide crews time to rest and rehydrate. Riley said this afternoon that it is hard to predict when the fire will be out.
"There was a heavy fire load in the cabinet shop," he said. "The racks were full of wood that is still burning."
