United States (New Jersey) - Northern New Jersey was in the middle of the first cold wave of the season when Hasbrouck Heights firefighters were faced with heavy fire on arrival on December 11th. Shortly before 9:30 PM, The Hasbrouck Heights F.D. was dispatched for a report of a working fire at 311 Washington Place. On arrival, units found the front porch fully involved with the fire extending inside. A second alarm was transmitted as lines were stretched and put into operation. The fire took possession of the front of the building on the first floor and was extending up to the second floor. The fire on the porch was quickly knocked down and members moved inside. It soon became apparent that the flames had gotten in the walls of the balloon frame dwelling, the visible fire was extinguished, but the smoke continued to intensify.

Members worked at opening up to find the fire, but the flames had too much of a head start. The second floor in the rear of the structure flashed over, sending heavy fire out of several windows. Evacuation tones were sounded and a defensive operation was set up. Aerial master streams from the Hasbrouck Heights stick, and the Little Ferry tower ladder were put in service, as well as several handlines. An exposure line was also put in operation to protect the home on the “D” side. Heavy fire extended to the “A” side on the second floor as well as consuming most of the roof.

The fire was able to be placed under control in about two hours. One firefighter and one civilian were transported to the hospital for minor injuries. Ice formed on the streets and sidewalks for the first time this season making firefighting and overhaul more difficult. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
