When they arrived, fire was shooting through the roofs of three third-story apartments in a 27-unit building, Wright said.
Firefighters from Morrisville, Apex, Western Wake, Cary and Durham knocked the fire down in about 20 minutes, but not before it gutted three apartments. Six more units were affected by heavy water and smoke damage.
More apartments at an adjacent building sustained light smoke and water damage.
Firefighters saved a cat from one of the third-floor apartments.
"It looked like a basic cat to me," Wright said. "It was real wet when I saw it, and real scared."
Wright said Red Cross volunteers and the apartment complex's property manager are working to find temporary shelter for 25 people who were displaced by the fire.
Fire investigators are still at the complex, digging through the debris while trying to determine a cause for the blaze.
"We really don't know the cause," Wright said. "It appears to be accidental."
