Rhodes was using a stand that allows a hunter, while seated and with both feet secured in straps, to climb up and down a tree.
The seat portion of the stand gave way as did the left foot strap.
Rhodes, a Woodlawn Volunteer Firefighter, said his right boot toe caught in the strap.
"Otherwise I'd have fallen right on my head and wouldn't be talking to you right now," he said.
Fellow hunter Pat Mueller, 42, was nearby when he heard the tree stand break and then Rhodes' shouts for help.
"I ran over and there he was hanging upside down like a possum," Mueller said. "He was yelling 'Call 911!' and 'Get me down.'"
