Investigation into the cause of the fire ongoing. Fire crews at the scene through the night and this morning we have two pumps still in attendance dampening down remaining hotspots. We do not expect to be in a position to release findings from the investigation until the end of the week. Update: 2.20pm 10/10 Fire investigations hampered by dangerous state of the pier which is still smouldering in the timbers and a few hot spots remain.
Fire crews attempting to tackle small seats of fire from boats close to the pier. Infrastructure also unsafe which is adding to operational difficulties. We anticipate being on the scene for some time. No further details at this time. Firefighters were called to the pier at 22:41. They were confronted with a rapidly growing fire in the buildings at the head of the Pier.
This included the pub, the fish and chip shop, the souvenir shops and the kiosks. Firefighters faced extreme difficulty tackling the fire, as they had to get men and equipment down the mile length of the pier with only RNLI Buggies, hovercrafts and boats as transportation. Water supplies were also a big problem. The tide was out and there were problems with the hydrants on the pier. At its height over 50 firefighters were at the scene. The fire was brought under control at 4am. All Persons have been accounted for.
