Fire Destroys Burlington House
United States (North Carolina) - A fire gutted an old farm house at the corner of Rainbow Avenue and Tucker Street Thursday afternoon. Burlington Fire Department Capt. Matt Lawrence said firefighters responded to the call at 705 Rainbow Ave. at about 3:30 p.m. Fire crews were still on the scene battling hot spots until after dark.

They did not leave the scene until after 10 p.m. When firefighters arrived on scene, smoke was already pouring out of windows. Firefighters attempted to fight the fire from inside the house, but were forced outside by the intensity of the blaze.

The majority of the damage was on the back of the house, which is where authorities believe the fire was started. The fire started on the first floor and quickly spread to the second floor and attic. Part of the backside roof collapsed early on.

Lawrence said the house was damaged so badly from fire and water that it is not inhabitable. Crews were taking extra precautions throughout the evening because old houses have many small voids where fire can hide, Lawrence said. No one was in the house when the fire started and no one was injured.

Although displaced by the fire, occupants of the house were able to stay with nearby family. Officials said that last spring the house's outback building caught on fire, the source of which was never determined. They don't know if there are any connections between the two fires. Next-door neighbor Janie Myers said the house didn't have electricity.

The cause of the fire is still unknown. Officials will be conducting interviews around the community before concluding the fire investigation. Neighbors said the house has been standing a long time. Built in 1920, it was known to some as the old coffin shop farm house.
