Two pumper trucks were set up east of town at the Mustinka River where they drafted water into tanker trucks which were brought into town. The Fergus Falls Fire Department brought 14 firefighters to the scene and had its ladder truck to get above the fire, which was contained to the Valley Woods building.
The fire had to be contained, otherwise Don's Body Shop and Beckman's Service Station could have been lost to the fire, too.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Grant County Sheriff's Office, the Minnesota State Fire Marshall and the Wendell Fire Department.
Responding fire departments assisting the Wendall Fire Department and Grant County Sheriff's Office included Elbow Lake, Ashby, Barrett, Hoffman, Herman, Fergus Falls, Dalton, Tintah and Fairmount, N.D.
Fergus Falls firefighters also responded to a chimney fire early Sunday morning, at a mobile home park in River N Woods Circle, according to Hovland. The fire started in the fireplace and spread to a wall. Crews were called at 6:45 a.m. The damage was contained to the living room. There was also some damage to the wiring.
Four people were in the home at the time, and one person was taken to Lake Region Hospital to be evaluated.
Elizabeth Fire Department also responded for mutual aid. Crews were on the scene for two hours.
