Residents advised firefighters that the couple was probably still inside.
At some point, the man ran outside of his apartment and yelled for help before running back inside to assist his wife, Lakewood police said. Neighbors said the woman had been ill and was unable to move around.
Firefighters extinguished the flames about 1:25 a.m. and discovered two bodies inside the unit where the fire started. The cause is being investigated but the fire is believed to have started in the living room.
Capt. Jenny Weekes said there were smoke alarms in the couple's apartment but it's unknown if they were working.
The fire destroyed the couple's apartment and severely damaged the two on each side of it. The Red Cross is helping six people find temporary housing.
