United States (North Carolina) - Shortly before 8 pm on Aug 11, 2013 Nash County NC 911 Center was receiving calls for a Tobacco Barn fire on Taylors Store Road in Nashville section of Nash County. Fire companies from Nashville, Red Oak, and Castalia along with EMS Units responded. Nashville Fire Department Engine 141 arrived on the scene minutes after the dispatch and reported they had a large metal tobacco barn with heavy smoke and fire showing. They began the attack with 1 3/4 hand lines. There were 96 other tobacco sheds located in the large storage area. Firefighters had the main blaze under control in about 30 minutes . Overhaul of the contents was done with an additional 1 ½ inch line. The contents of 146 racks of tobacco had to be removed for complete extinguishment. This was a very labor intensive process as it was done by hand. With the high temperatures and humidity it was necessary to rotate crews on a regulars basis to keep them hydrated. Units cleared the scene at 11:30 pm. Thirty-six firefighters were on location and there were no reports of any injuries.
