Firefighter Hurt, Pets Killed In House Fire
A firefighter was injured and two dogs and bird were killed Tuesday in a house fire at 2416 Union Cross Road, authorities said Wednesday. The fire started about 1 p.m. Neighbors saw smoke coming from the two-story house and called 911, the Winston-Salem Fire Department said.

The dogs and bird died before the firefighters arrived, the fire department said. One firefighter suffered from heat exhaustion, but was doing OK on Wednesday, Fire Chief Antony Farmer said.

The fire caused $435,000 in damage, the fire department said. Investigators are trying to determine the cause.

The homeowner is staying with relatives.
