United States (New Jersey) - A intense fire destroyed a large home in Kinnelon on March 18th. The speed in which the fire grew, and the distance from a good water source made fighting the fire extremely difficult. Kinnelon firefighters were dispatched at about 11:30 for a basement fire at 16 Forge Rd. The first arriving Chief confirmed the working basement fire with heavy smoke throughout the 2 ½ story frame dwelling. The home was at the top of a long, steep, and narrow driveway, which was at the end of a steep cul-de-sac. Knowing that water supply would be an issue, mutual aid was immediately called including tankers.

First due Engine 3, was able to maneuver up the driveway to the home, but all other apparatus had to stage in the cul-de-sac and members had to walk up. Handlines were stretched off of Engine 3 and companies appeared to be making progress but soon ran out of tank water. “We are out of water” was heard over the radio from several units. Flames intensified and a FIT-5 was deployed in the basement once again knocking down the heavy fire, but without water to back it up, the fire grew again.

Several engine companies emptied their hose beds laying in to the closest hydrant which was over a mile away. Drop tanks were also set up at the entrance to the cul-de-sac and supplied by a tanker shuttle, but by the time a reliable, but limited, water supply was established, flames had possession of the structure and companies were forced to go defensive.

Flames pushed out of numerous windows and through the roof. Nearby trees and brush began to ignite prompting a response from Forestry Firefighters. The flames rose over the tree tops as the structure was slowly consumed. Eventually, most of the building collapsed and the intensity of the fire diminished. Mutual aid units started to be released about 3:30, but overhaul and final extinguishments would take hours more.
