The truck was headed north on Highway 501 at Harris Mill Road in Durham, near the Person County line, about 3 a.m. when the driver noticed the rear wheels had apparently overheated and caught fire, and pulled over. Flames had burned into the trailer.
Fire destroyed several pallets of napkins and other paper supplies, sugar and flour. But most of the food was refrigerated in a self-contained part of the vehicle, and was not damaged.
Needham said firefighters spent about an hour unloading the truck, and completed the job about 4:15 a.m.
"It was a mess to put out," he said.
Both northbound lanes of Highway 501 were closed for about an hour.
