Pupils Flee Factory Fire

A school was evacuated, roads were closed and thousands of residents were warned to stay indoors after a massive fire broke out in a printing works yesterday. The blaze at the Benkert factory in Alva, Clackmannanshire, which started around 11.20am, was tackled by 75 firefighters and 16 fire engines.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing "two huge mustard-coloured plumes of smoke" and said the air tasted "sweet".
Pupils at Alva Academy, which is right next to the factory, were sent home and residents were warned that the fumes might contain a mild irritant.
Despite the extent of the fire, no casualties were reported.
