400 Pigs Die In Canadian Barn Fire
Nearly 400 pigs were killed when fire swept through a barn in Chatham, Ontario, a fire official said. Assistant Chatham Fire Chief Ray Stone said it was suspected the Monday blaze was started by sparks from a grinder being used by the owner, who was repairing farm equipment, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.
Stone said firefighters tried to get the pigs to safety but the animals kept going back into the burning barn.
About 40 pigs survived, he said.
"They were all making these squealing noises and you know trying to get out and it's not a pretty sight," Stone said.
The farmer's losses were put at an estimated $800,000.
