Australia - Fire crews have brought a blaze at a scrap metal yard in Brisbanes east under control after more than five hours fighting it. The fire, at the Onesteel Recycling scrap metal yard in Hemmant, was contained just before midnight by crews who had feared it could burn until dawn. The fire broke out around 5.30pm in a mound of scrap metal at the Anton Road address. Management of Onesteel were called to the site and assisted fire crews by providing machinery. At one stage the fire stretched 20m across its base and up to 9m high, prompting the Department of Community Safety to warn residents of north Brisbane to close their doors and windows. Residents across the northern suburbs of Brisbane reported the burning smell but it was unknown whether the smoke was toxic. An emergency services spokeswoman said two crews would remain on site overnight to monitor the blaze. The cause of the fire is still unknown.
