Fire Billows Toxic Plume Across Australian Capital
CANBERRA - Firefighters have gained control over a factory fire that billowed toxic smoke across Australia's national capital, Canberra. The plume closed many schools and two people required medical treatment minor smoke inhalation. Emergency Services Commissioner Mark Crosweller says firefighters and police established a 6-mile (10-kilometer) cordon around the factory after the fire started late Thursday and some residents were evacuated.
He says by Friday evening firefighters had gained control of the blaze.
Residents in nearby suburbs reported a series of explosions from the fire that shook their homes. Flames could be seen shooting hundreds of yards (meters) into the sky.
