Three-Alarm Fire Consumes Hackensack Home
United States (New Jersey) -
Hackensack used a third alarm response to fight a blaze that gutted a large home in the early morning of April 26th. At approximately 3:00 AM the Hackensack Fire Department dispatched an assignment for a working fire at 220 Anderson Street. A Police unit arrived first and reported that the entire front of the house was engulfed and a resident had jumped from the second floor.
Fire units arrived quickly and immediately sounded a second alarm. Handlines were stretched and an attempt was made to enter the front door, but the front porch was already burnt through making access impossible. Another line was stretched in the rear door, but the heavy interior fire soon forced that to be withdrawn also.
A third alarm was transmitted as an exterior attack was commenced. Two firefighters narrowly escaped injury as they operated a handline in the driveway. The front porch roof collapsed without warning, knocking the firefighters to the ground. Brother firefighters quickly came to their aid, but they were not injured and returned to battling the fire.
Truck 2’s ladder pipe and Engine 5’s deck gun were also put into service and a collapse zone was established. After about two hours, the exterior lines had knocked down the fire and the job was placed under control, but overhaul would be an extended process due to the condition of the building.
The cause is being investigated, but it is believed that there was a delay in reporting the fire, and the residents may have tried to fight the fire themselves first. There was a garden hose stretched down the driveway. One firefighter was transported to the hospital with a reported back injury.
