Callahan recently was working on a project to restore Beck's Mill southwest of Salem in Washington County.
According to Jackson County Sheriff's Department Officer Rick Meyer's report, the estimated value of the building and its contents were not known at press time. Meyer also reported the fire could be seen from as far away as Seymour.
Carr Township firefighters responded to the fire and were joined by firefighters from Owen, Driftwood, Grassy Fork and Brownstown townships in Jackson County as well as firefighters from Guthrie, Shawswick and Pleasant Run townships in Law-rence County.
An Indiana Department of Natural Resources fire team also assisted at the scene, and the Jackson County chapter of the American Red Cross provided firefighters with food and drinks.
The last Carr Township firefighters left the scene at 10:53 p.m. Monday.
The fire also threatened a race horse that Callahan had stabled in a nearby building that firefighters were spraying down to protect from the heat.
Callahan removed the horse from the barn. The horse was not injured.
The fire did ignite some grass fires near the woodshop.
