Fire Still Burns 12 Hours On
United Kingdom - London Fire Brigade has now removed the hazard zone following a fire which broke out in the early hours of this morning at a warehouse on Canal Approach in Deptford. A number of gas cylinders including two acetylene cylinders were reported at the scene of the fire which caused substantial damage to the two storey warehouse. A 200 metre hazard zone was put in place to ensure public safety, as some cylinders can explode when exposed to heat. Acetylene presents a unique risk in comparison to all other bottled gases due to its instability and can travel up to 175 metres if they explode. Up to 200 residents were evacuated from their homes.

The Brigade keep the need for a restricted zone under regular review and has now confirmed that the two acetylene incidents were not directly involved in the fire, so have been able to move them to a safe location where they will continue to be cooled as a safety precaution. The hazard zone has now been removed, and a smaller restriction zone for firefighters to work within is now in place.

The Brigade was called at 0029 and at the height of the incident over 50 firefighters and ten fire appliances attended the incident. Fire crews are likely to remain at the scene throughout the evening.
